Washed out

Feel It All Around

Yeah, I'm a couple years late on this one so what?  I heard this from Portlandia, but let's keep that between you and me.  When I was looking for videos for Feel It All Around I stumbled upon this little tribute to Kelly Slater with the song I was looking for, a two-fer as they say.  Speaking of Kelly, I was on Surfline and saw this nuts air he punted down under at Bells.

I'm surprised he only won the heat with that.  I got my surfboard from my amigo Jeff and I'm going to take that little sucker up to SC with me.  Hopefully, there'll be some waves!  One more quick cover of Feel It All Around by Toro Y Moi.

uuuuhhhhhhhh such good jams.  Paz.

It Ain't Easy Bein' Steezy

For this kid it comes naturally.

As of Monday at 10:07 AM Pacific Standard Time, Buck Yedor who is a contributor to GOON SQUAD FOREVER and my roommate, saw his friend stock increase 666%.  What could prompt such a huge spike in his value you might ask?  Well, it all started in the hot summer of 2010 when a little injury cut Buck Yedor's study abroad in Spain short by 9 months.  In the time recovering back in the good old US of A the beast within could hardly be contained, motivating buck to train his upper body for rock climbing.  Unfortunately, his dedication and passion for climbing led to another injury in one of his hands. The workings of life are mysterious as they are confusing and when one door temporarily closes another opens.

Bucks departure for Thailand in a second attempt at study abroad had many hoping this trip would revitalize our friends spirit and energy for new things to come.  And come they did.  Upon Bucks arrival from school in paradise, had one goal in mind: get sponsored for slacklining.  So what happens after a couple of months chilling super hard in Isla Vista and making everyone jealous for being finished with college?  Buck masters the butt bounce, chest bounce, back flip, front flip, completes a promo video, and gets invited to compete in Vail, Colorado's Teva Mountain Games as well as the Parker games.  If you've ever come by 6625 Trigo and seen the crazy blond kid doing things on a little line 3 feet off the ground, then you've probably seen Buck doing his thang.  If not, check out his promo footage below.

We'll be keeping up with Buck's progress in the world of slacklining and hopefully he'll be sending us some new vids to blow our minds with.  Check back here in a couple weeks to find out how he performed in Vail!  GOON SQUAD FOREVER wishes you good luck, Buck and may the force be with you.

Extravagonza!

So UCSB's AS Program Board finally released the Extravaganza line up and I'm not disappointed.  Though they never really have let me down in the past, this year is going to be particularly enjoyable simply because 1. I have heard of all of the bands playing 2. I enjoy all of the bands playing.  For some of you, a few of the artists may raise some questionable flags (Wolfgang Gartner, Surfer Blood) but let me reassure you that this line up is going to be a great way to end the quarter and kick off summer.  Let's take a look at Gartner first.

I was first introduced to WG's dancy/house stuff with the song Undertaker below:

Undertaker
by Wolfgang Gartner

That was from 2010 and in his latest track, Redline, we get a taste of the direction that EDM has gone over the last two years.  Very danceable and very fun.

Redline
by Wolfgang Gartner

The next group is one that I have recently discovered and am glad that they are part of this years line up because c'maan!  We gotta satisfy our indie music bloodlust.  Surfer Blood, as this group is known, will fit perfect right after the Fire Department and right before Iration, building the excitement for the grand finale with S N double-O P D O double-G Y, D O double-G!  To get you better acquainted with Surfer Blood, here are a few songs they might play.

Floating Vibes
by Surfer Blood

SWIM
by Surfer Blood

Well I hope you will enjoy these two artists at Extravaganza.  If you don't like the lineup, don't complain because it makes you look like a spoiled bitch. Cheers!

The First Floor

A slice of heaven

So far Spring Quarter hasn't been disappointing with the surf.  I mean it could be a whole lot better, but I'm happy it's not any worse.  Coming soon to an ocean near you is the great and seasonal Lake Pacific; great for Bros, Hos, and everything not surfing.  Fortunately, I've made a one of a kind friend, a special friend with mystical powers.  What kind of wizardry is this, you may say?  Well, co-worker and amigo Jeff Svoboda is going to shape me a surfboard.  Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to his lair underneath The Men's Center (that he dug out with his own hands) to check out the First Floor.  So I show up and poke my head through a small door leading to a very dimly lit room full of long boards.  Opposite me was the outline of another door, light emanating between every crack.   Whatever lay beyond that door, I thought to myself, is the black magic I need we all need  to set out on insane future surf quests.

I've never been in a room where shapers do their thang, but I felt like I was in an issue of Surfing Mag.  It was dreamlike. Pinch me bro!  The chi was there, it was palpable or maybe that was the dust from sanding the board.  Whatever.  The first thing that came to my mind when I walked through the pearly gates was, "wow, this looks like a goddamn photoshoot!"  I mean the lighting was beautiful, but not because it was special.  It was f#$%!&g beautiful because it made the surfboard on the shaping rack look like the best stick I'd ever seen.  Jeff was putting the final touches on his latest endeavor, a 7 something fun board, when I interrupted.  So we sat down, cracked a few brews, and went to talking about his operation.

The First Floor is recent renovation and a sanctuary for Jeff.  From what we've discussed, this guy's got some solid plans for the near future and is set to shape myself and my amigo, Gabe Leoni, a board that'll hopefully tickle our fancies for many years to come.  Something that struck me most throughout my visit was the passion that Jeff had for surfing.  It was evident from the mixture of art on the walls to the organization of tools and the well-shaped board that lay unfinished on the rack.  They say the best job is doing something you love, and boy, I want this kid to shape my board because you can tell he's devoted to the art and craftsmanship part of putting a board together.  He loves it, man.  So far, I'm pretty sold on buying a First Floor board and I can't wait to get wet with one under my feet.

Fast forward a week of stiff negotiations (not) about dimensions and shapes when I suddenly get this picture message from Jeff:

Courting the bride to be

Dear 8 pounds, 6 ounces, new born infant baby Jesus!  The process had started and progressed so quickly that before I knew it, I was receiving the following image a couple of days later.

I've got butterflies in my tum tum

I am stoooked to get this puppy into the ocean, but I have to wait two weeks while it is getting glassed in the shop.  So to hold you over until we see the final product keep checking back here for more sweet tunes and other fun stuff.  A big shout out to Jeff for shaping me this board, thanks brah!  Happy surfing kiddos.
