Vacations

North Texan and Fungi Girls’ frontman, Jacob Bruce oozes dream pop glitter out of his pours.  His solo project under the name Vacations will be there for all those warm summer evenings and laid-back gatherings of respectable women and gentlemen.  Having only one release on Play! Pinball Records, Bruce puts his best foot forward with Clouded Nights, a track that you can't help but to tap you foot or nod your head.  I'm anticipating more releases of this caliber.  Have a listen.

The Clash

I was getting jerked around on the bus today while I was heading to work  when I realized that MIA's Paper Planes sampled the Clash's Straight to Hell.  I might be the only one who didn't know this so it came as a pretty weird surprise.  I actually thought a Paper Planes remix had been incorrectly labeled or I accidentally hit shuffle somehow, but that was not the case.  The discovery actually bothered me for a minute because I really dislike MIA and thought that she might have stole some of the Clash's thunder for the melody.  But Straight to Hell, while less poppy and dancy was a gem hiding in my ipod waiting to be found.  So here I am sharing it with you.  Enjoy.

This track is dedicated to a fellow fan of the Clash, Daveed.  Kill it up there, hombre.

Vibes of the Tribe

Here's some fresh original music for you guys!  I've been trying very hard to achieve that elusive production blend between the acoustic sounds that I love and the new age beat structures/ percussive rhythms that I find blissfully hypnotic.  Please check out my new song and share it if you enjoy what you're hearing!

On a side note: I'll be spinning/performing some music live at Avalon bar in Costa Mesa, Saturday May 4.  There will be an art showcase, lots of good tunes, and chill peeps to hang out with all night so come check it out!

French Cassettes

Every once in a while really cool things kinda happen and you just get really lucky.  I've been getting really lucky since I've moved to San Francisco (except for those fucking parking tickets) and that good fortune has manifested itself in the form of my living situation.  I mean, I share a dining room of a house with my stinky friend Charlie McCone, but the gold nugget fact of the matter is that a sick ass band called the French Cassettes also lives here.  Home is known as the Cat House and this place is always full of talented musicians jamming away in the living room.  The living room is synonymous with recording studio, which has been getting a lot of use as of late.  Since my room is literally on the other side of a curtain, I've been catching the tail end of the French Cassette's production of their newest album Gold Youth that is slated to be released this Summer 2013.  Now this isn't the first time I've heard the FC.  Way back in my college days I saw the Cassettes rock a crowd out in Isla Vista and a few of their well-known tracks called Radley and Mouth Drum really got people psyched.  Here's Mouth Drum below.

If you're even remotely into those bangin' jams you might shit your pants when you hear the sounds of Gold Youth.  I'm getting really stoked to listen to the final product and know that when all is said and done, the amount of effort and attention to detail these guys put into their music will surely pay off.  In recent news, the French Cassettes said goodbye to their former drummer and wish him the best in his future endeavors.  With a void to be filled, the FC are pleased to announce and welcome their new drummer, James/Jimbo J.   Though he doesn't think we hang out with any girls (because we don't) James' educational background in jazz drumming, top-notch drum-tastic technique, and many years as a drummer will only further lend to enhance the bands overall talent and future possibilities.  These guys are locked and cocked to blow your socks off so stay tuned for updates about French Cassettes' upcoming shows and their new album.  ALSO!  Be a lad/lass and like their Facebook page, they'ed really appreciate it.

Angel Olsen

So last night I was hanging with the French Cassettes at the Cat House and their new drummer, Jimbo James, busts out the new Angel Olsen mix.  He pops it in the cd player and after the first track I was immediately blown away.  Angel's got quite the voice.  Kind of a melodramatic Johnny Cash/ Quentin Tarantino massacre feeling that sounds so intense and feels invigorating.  I can't seem to find the song that really tooted my horn, but below are a few other very notable tunes.

When I make a surf edit, if I ever do, the one above is going to be playing in the background.

Angel Olsen will be playing the Rickshaw Stop on Saturday April 6, 2013.

Jean Raw

What a nice Saturday it is going to be today.  The sky looks clear and the temp is crisp 58 degrees, perfect for some jams by an old friend I met in Spain.  Going by the name of Jean Raw, this stud is a native of Los Angeles, but derives his sound from years of travel throughout the world. Since returning to this home town of LA in December of 2012, he has started releasing the many gems that he had been keeping for his DJ sets. Be on the look-out for a handful of remixes and an original EP in the first two quarters of 2013.  Below are a few of my favorite tracks that Jean Raw has produced thus far and might I say, I enjoy them quite a bit.

Hit up his soundcloud page and like his facebook page.  Oh! don't forget to grab those tracks, they're free to download on soundcloud.  Paz.

Enjoy

Let's talk about Enjoy.  So during my brief sabbatical that encompassed me moving to San Francisco I found this little nugglet titled Give Me Something.   Burger Records' soundcloud page is chalk full of siiiick tracks so check those guys out. Previously, we've posted a track by Enjoy in early December that I was really digging called Out of Sight, which really set the stage for Give Me Something to really get a picture of what the band is all about.  What Enjoy brings in their latest efforts is an cool and upbeat sound with punkish undertones.  I LIKE.  So much so I bought it off of their bandcamp page for 1 DOLLAR.  WHAT A STEAL!  It's a badass track that'll be sick to skate around town to.  Give it a listen.

Milo Greene

1957 & Autumn Tree

I can't say enough good, actually great things, about this band. I first caught them when they opened for The Kooks in October of 2011 and for a local band opening at the Fox Theater, they had the whole crowd pumped up for a great show. This band is so energetic, giving it their all as their chemistry is reflected in their music playing. If you ever have a chance to catch this band live you will not want to miss them. And if you buy their CD or vinyl they will not hesitate to talk to you after the show and sign your merchandise. 1957 is their hit single which is the song that put them on the map in the indie music world but the other song that really shows you how talented each and everyone of the band members are is Autumn Tree. From beginning to end you get a feeling of nostalgia and just keep running through a series of emotions as the song transitions from verse to chorus. Take in each of these songs and look more into the band. Definitely recommend their self titled album. With that said, enjoy!

One more thing, if you ever have time, check out their cover of Chicago by Sufjan Stevens. There is no official recording of the song but youtube has a few videos of them performing it live. Will not disappoint.

Yeah, she is clearly taken by yours truly ;)

Jack White

Love Interruption/Blunderbuss

I've recommended a few albums. This is another one for the record books, Jack White's solo album Blunderbuss. Anything this guy releases becomes an instant classic, and during the Grammy's I was hoping he would play Blunderbuss but instead kicked off his performance with Love Interruption and transitioned to Freedom at 21. Incredible performance nonetheless, but here are a few of my favorite tunes from the album. Love Interruption was recorded with Ruby Amanfu who was also at the Grammy's with Mr. White and Blunderbuss just one that calls out every time you play it.

Buy the album, trust me.  -mario

Talib Kweli feat. Norah Jones

Soon the New Day

I'm surprised this didn't become an instant classic. Talib Kweli always dropping his one of a kind lyrics about getting up and going mixed with the ever so talented and gorgeous Norah Jones vocals. It's a shame this song didn't make much noise when it was released. I'd definitely consider it to be a classic, and there is just something about Miss Norah Jones that mesmerizes you when she sings. You just seem to get lost in her voice and try to gather your thoughts on what it is you just heard. Fascinating.

The Procussions feat. Shad & J Kyle Gregory

Today

Take a listen. I'm not one to listen to hip-hop much or have of an experience with connecting to rhymes, beats and flows but I heard this and took one step closer to the whole hip-hop and underground scene. The Procussions definitely the type of hip-hop tunes I love to listen to with their instrumental backgrounds and trumpet loops. You can't just listen to this track once. Bob your head back and forth, because you know it feels right.

Mark Ronson and The INTL feat. Andrew Wyatt (Miike Snow)

Somebody to Love Me

Listen to this, and cherish it. Embrace it and feel his vocals run through you. Yes, that is Andrew Wyatt from Miike Snow making an appearance with Mark Ronson on Triple J. Boy George was the original vocalist on the recording of this song but rumor has it Boy George was forced to do this song with Mark Ronson when he wanted nothing to do with it, but hey! That's just a rumor. Nonetheless, Andrew Wyatt definitely personalizes this song with his vocals. Such a great song.

The Underachievers

So a while back we dropped Gold Soul Theory and after one play you could tell these guys were going to get big.  More recently, the Underachievers have teamed up with Brainfeeder to produce Indigoism.  Check out what Brainfeeder had to say about it:

"‘Indigoism’ marks the first Brainfeeder/Underachievers collaboration. Dropping February 1st, the 17-track mixtape features the duo’s underground hits (including ‘Gold Soul Theory,’ ‘Herb Shuttles’ and ‘Leopard Shepherd’), in addition to brand new tracks produced by the likes of Mr Bristol, Rich Flyer, The Entreproducers, Bruce Lee Kixxs, Juice and Lou Chapo from Tribe Gang, and Dreamrite. Listening to their sage lyrics, it’s hard to believe they’re only 21 (Ak) and 22 (Issa Dash) years old. And on the strength of ‘Indigoism,’ it’s near impossible to believe that up until 9 months ago, Ak and Dash had no set intention to be in the rap game at all. As they say themselves: “Indigos on the rise.”"

The Mahdi is one of my personal favorites and we've got the video ready to go after the jump.  Also! be sure to grab your free copy of Indigoism (link below the video).

Poolside

Ladies and gentlemen! I present to you, Poolside. Yes, you heard right, Poolside! Who are they you say? That is for me to know and you to find out, but believe me when I say that this bands debut album Pacific Standard Time is one that you will not want to miss out on. This band will be playing at UC Santa Barbara's The Hub this Thursday night and it will definitely be one for the record books as this electric-duo drop synthesized funk that will have the whole venue dancing. Believe me when I say, I am incredibly stoked for this band. They are making a lot of noise, to the point where Los Angeles Times wrote the best song anyone played was a Neil Young cover(by Poolside) at this past summer's HARD event in Chinatown. Even someone as big as LCD Soundsystem gave an approval of the band as "James Murphy, the LCD Soundsystem frontman and an inspired crate-digger of rare disco cuts, was a few tunes into his late-night DJ set when he quietly slipped in an edit of the folk rocker's 'Harvest Moon'"

more on the Los Angeles Times piece: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/aug/05/entertainment/la-et-ms-pop-music-review-the-two-sides-of-the-hard-summer-music-festival-2012-20120805

You will listen to this album, and enjoy every song on it. When you do, you will realize that it will be a treasure for the future and one that you are going to want to hold in your hands for years to come.
With that said, enjoy Poolside.

Grizzly Bear

Gun-Shy

It should come with no surprise to the ones who know me that I was bound to post a song by my favorite band. I like to describe Grizzly Bear as an acquired taste. It is hard for someone to instantly connect and fall for the music this band puts forth. Took me a while to ease into their sound, tones, and mood this band expresses. I have come to notice a pattern of this being the case with other friends who eventually enjoy another song of Grizzly Bear other than their most popular hit "Two Weeks." With that said, if you have time to explore this band and love watching funky and trippy music videos, then this might be the band for you. Grizzly Bear is notorious for releasing the most abstract, mindful images on their videos. For their latest album Shields, they have released a video for their song Gun-Shy which was directed by Kris Moyes. Luckily, you can get an idea as to what the point the video is trying to portray from this interview with the director
"The idea came from a question:- if the creative energy of any living organism could be seen, what would it look like? Ed, Daniel, T and Bear demonstrate where their creative energy is located by extracting their hair, nails, skin, sweat, tears and blood. This is an invitation for a very rare glimpse of what creative energy could look like on a molecular level, if it could be seen..."
(more of the interview on:  http://grizzlybearband.tumblr.com/post/40850220794/about-the-gun-shy-video-from-director-kris-moyes)

Even when you pre-acknowledge the message the video is trying to relay, you still lose sense of the point and are awe-struck with everything that is going on with the video. I could sit here and write out an essay about this band but I would rather much let you, the reader and listener go about that journey. Everything about this band is open for interpretation, and that is the beauty of it. Aside from the video, enjoy the music.

Crazy Guy On A Bike

One of Goon Squad's own, Gabe Leoni, recently began a most epic bike trip starting at the southernmost tip of South America.  Gabe hopes to peddle his way home to California with high hopes of surfing all along the Chilean coastline.  Having lived with Gabe in his dope-ass Winnebago in Isla Vista, CA it's so damn awesome that he's finally down there living the young man's dream.  GSF will be posting select pictures from his trip with links to updated journal entries that he posts in his online journal called Flowing With the Go in South America.  I took a writing class with Gabe and he weirdly (in a good way) reminds me of Edward Abbey, the infamous leader of the Monkey Wrench Gang who took an almost militant approach to environmentalism.  Basically a badass mother fucker, man.  Hit "read more" below to see pics and for the link to Gabe's journal.

ESPRIT 空想

Hey amigos, I've got a special selection for you today.  ESPRIT, hailing from the far away land of Singapore has released a FREE download of their latest album Girls Only.  My favorite tracks are Sweetwine and 痴心妄想 (whatever that means [edit: just had it translated and it is Chinese for wishful thinking hmmm...]) and their more well known track is Daydream, which is also pretty good.  I'm not trying to rage with Esprit in my headphones, just trying to chill if you're catching my drift.  I had the ideal situation for jammin' to Esprit earlier today; a nice, smooth skate down a few not so steep hills to the coffee shop.  My only criticism of the album is that most of the tracks are a little too short.   Overall, these guys' laid-back and chill wavish sounds will be another enjoyable addition to The Hong Kong Lounge (the go to playlist).  I definitely recommend giving Girls Only a thorough listen, download,  and a share.  Hit "Read more" below to listen.

One of my two favorites mashed up into one. Air, always creating the most simple of sounds and managing for them to stick to your head. Urbance

Here's a trailer for the new animated tv series called Urbance.  The story sounds a little cheesy, but the visuals look pretty darn good.  This is the description:

"In the big city, gender war rises. Sex is prohibited because of a genetic deadly virus. Ruled by hate and anger, boys and girls grow up apart from each other, forming rivals gangs.  Among these lost teenagers, Kenzell and lesya will fight adversity and defy all the rules in order to live their love and restore peace."

I'm posting this because I'm down for Busy P and his track called Pedrophilia.  Check out the vid below.

Gang Gang Dance

I'm an enormous fan of Gang Gang Dance and I get all riled up if I find out they have new stuff in the works.  Though I enjoy speculating as to whether they are producing a new album or not, I caught a glimpse of hopeful light at the end of the tunnel that took the form of the video below.  Band member Brian Degraw is the wizard behind the very, well, just read the description:

"'Psychic Data, Atmospheric Noise' is an audio/visual ode to the present state of the shift in Universal consciousness. It is a fragment of a life that has been pushed to the fringes of science.....the melding of man and nature in the theater of waking dreams. The images and sounds are inspired by Random Number Generators, Remote Healing techniques, theories of the Noosphere, 'JLG/JLG', and 'Timepiece' by Jim Henson.

The sound in the film does not focus on "song" in the musical sense, but rather on the juxtaposition of sound and image and the power of brevity, silence, and space. The sounds consist mainly of field recordings from the town of Woodstock along with sound effects and fragments of ambiance i recorded in my studio.

Directed, Filmed, and Edited by Brian DeGraw.
Starring Tony Cox, BDG ,and Fffffrog.
Assisted by Michael James Fox.
Made possible in part by GleamHouse."

Those who are not artistically inclined or on acid should note that there is a yummy morsel of sound that starts around 4:50.

Psychic Data, Atmospheric Noise

In doing a little research for this post I discovered that our heroes have come out with a remix of FaltyDL's 'She Sleeps.'  It gets cool for me about halfway.

Cheers!
