In the beginning, we have the Jade Emperor, The Creator.
He creates the 12 year Zodiac cycle as a way of measuring time.
The animals compete in a swimming race for their place in the Zodiac.
In the middle we have the Demon, the Destructor.
And so the Yin and Yang balance is complete, and the Zodiac is destroyed.
At the end we see the cat, who was betrayed by the rat in the race for the Zodiac.
The rat pushed him off the Ox into the water.
And this is the source of the cat's hatred for the rat.
