Crazy Guy On A Bike

One of Goon Squad's own, Gabe Leoni, recently began a most epic bike trip starting at the southernmost tip of South America.  Gabe hopes to peddle his way home to California with high hopes of surfing all along the Chilean coastline.  Having lived with Gabe in his dope-ass Winnebago in Isla Vista, CA it's so damn awesome that he's finally down there living the young man's dream.  GSF will be posting select pictures from his trip with links to updated journal entries that he posts in his online journal called Flowing With the Go in South America.  I took a writing class with Gabe and he weirdly (in a good way) reminds me of Edward Abbey, the infamous leader of the Monkey Wrench Gang who took an almost militant approach to environmentalism.  Basically a badass mother fucker, man.  Hit "read more" below to see pics and for the link to Gabe's journal.

Shane Smith of Vice

Recently, a video series called The Mexican Mormon War (below) was published on vice.com that shed light on an escalating conflict between Mormons living south of the border and the drug cartels.  CEO of Vice, Shane Smith, sacked up and investigated the ridiculous history that led to the Mormons getting armed to the teeth (it's against the law to have a gun in Mexico) and revealed a lot of truths mainstream media doesn't care to share with the rest of us.

The best part about watching the video series is how much of a badass mother fucker Shane is. If you're still not convinced, check out his trip to North Korea.

It was a funny coincidence that I got fully aboard the Shane train because I recently began listening to Joe Rogan's podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, a few days ago and he mentioned how Shane had called in to promote The Mexican Mormon War.  So I checked out the podcast and the topics that Joe and Shane discussed ranged from the DEA training the Zeta Cartel to opium in Afghanistan and even the surprising origins of the Somali pirates.  For some reason, I surprised to learn that Joe Rogan isn't just some UFC bro, but a very insightful dude whose altruistic views are thought provoking and insightful.  The two guys conversing with one another is definitely worth a listen, so give it a shot.  Start the video at 7:30 and Shane hangs up around 56:30.

Bonus!

Below is a response to, "what are some travel tips?" from an IAmA with Shane.  This is his response:

well figure out a place that sounds insane, then buy a ticket.
Try and fit in, dress like a bum with a few local flourishes, learn some of the language and if possible stay drunk.
I got started by traveling for Vice around the world/
I never feel like I was going to die until I got on the plane home as is usual.

I wanna be like that guy.
