Gaslamp Killer

Nissim (with Amir Yaghmai)
Dead Vets
ft. Adrian Younge and MRR

"Brainfeeder stalwart, Gaslamp Killer, takes a break from curating mixes of the wildest Anatolian-psyche and Persian-rock breaks to focus on this massively anticipated, long-playing debut, 'Breakthrough'. He also features here in charge of the drum battery, exercising those rhythms / breaks in full effect, inspired from the impenetrably obscure records that are the mainstay in his record box.

On accompanying detail, his familiar, Gonjasufi breaks into shamanistic howl on the savage-strings of 'Veins' and the psyche-heavy, 'Apparitions'. Fellow LA-based beatmaker, Daedelus, also appears, stirring up the demented, electronic fusion of 'Apparitions'. Dimlite is also here and his contribution to the moog-heavy funk of '7 Years of Bad Luck for Fun'. A hard-hitting debut that's as breathtaking, diverse and challenging a listen in equal measure."

For a while I had been hoping GLK would be coming out with something new and look what I found? Breakthrough baby!  The two tracks above are my top picks of the album (so far) and stay pretty much within the boundaries of his established sound and style.  I wish I could have heard some of his stuff leading up to the Breakthrough release, but I have yet to make the short journey to Low End Theory.  I know GLK has some pretty formidable DJ skills, but I'd like to see the eccentric dude prove himself with the live instruments he used to produce the album.  Either way, seeing GLK perform a DJ set or live one, it'd be fun time all around.
